North Turn Harbor, Alaska, USA, is too far north for sightseeing and too small for postcards. The Hitt Bros. office sits behind a wet dock with a radio in the window and a line of rain coats on the wall. Outside, the M/V Rock Bottom knocks softly against the tires along the pier.

On the counter is a temporary watch form, clipped to a pay envelope. The last envelope has a red stamp across it: WATCH COMPLETE. It has not been claimed.

The clerk says the watch is one night. Lines, lamps, repairs, weather. Nothing heroic. Nothing beyond the light.

Past the dock, North Turn Light moves through the fog and shows the rocks exactly where they are.
