The front bay at Bill & Bob Wheel & Wagon Shop opens under the big arched sign at 404 Wobble Street, Akron, Ohio, USA.

By midmorning, an old carriage is rolled onto the shop floor. Red spokes. Warm varnish. A front wheel that knocks every third turn. Its owner says the road has been rough.

The shop does not argue with the road.

The wheel comes off. The hub is wiped clean. A chalk mark goes on the rim. From the tool rack beside the wall-hung wheel come the spoke wrench and the heavy mallet. The wheel is set on the bench and spun slow.

First turn: nothing.
Second turn: almost straight.
Third turn: the same small dip, in the same place.

The rim is not ruined. The carriage is not lost. One painted spoke has gone slack and taught the whole wheel to wobble around it.

The wrench takes a half turn. The mallet answers once. Chalk dust falls to the bench.

When the wheel goes back on, Wobble Street is still Wobble Street.

But the carriage leaves quieter than it came.
